www.smithy.com (view transcription of video below) Learn about the basics of metal lathe operations using our Smithy Granite combo lathe machines. You can visit us at www.smithy.com for more information or send us any questions about your project. Our trained technicians will be glad to help you with your project. “The selection of a cutting tool is probably the most important decision a machinist can make. We are going to cover some of the basics, but I urge everyone who intends to use the lathe, to learn as much about cutting tools as possible. They are the key to the quality of your work. Lathe tools are made from many different types of materials, in many sizes and styles. The three types we are using today are, from the left, high-speed steel tools, carbide-tipped tools, and on the right, carbide-insert tools. High-speed steel tools can be used on many turning operations, on all but the toughest alloys. The tools are sold as blanks in many sizes and grades. The machinist grinds the point of the tool depending on the type of metal he is cutting and the type of turning operation he intends to do. A good machinist’s handbook will give you the standard guidelines for grinding high-speed steel tools. The cutting edge of a carbide-tipped tool is brazed to the end of a steel shank. The shape of the cutting edge, it’s profile and cutting angles, are manufactured into the tool. A little cleanup on a green wheel, a silicone carbide grinding wheel, and the tool is ready to go …
Therefore, I have a decent fairly expensive looking rotor cutting machine/lathe at my shop that I was wondering if I could use to shave my faces down to create a flat surface? Would I just need to change the cutting blades? My faces, I believe are aluminum.

I have done it before but I went to a machinest to have him shave down my faces, but he’s hard to get in contact with and pretty unreliable sometimes.
@mindbomb, i don’t know if your being sarcastic, what would break?
by the way, of course i searched google. my question is very rare which is why i posted here.
ive worked a lathe and cut a rotor before, just wondering if it would cut threw my rim face since its aluminum.

Here I describe in detail the steps I took to cut threads in an aluminum rod on my metal lathe. I was creating a tool holder to hold a small Dremel chuck, meaning that I had to duplicate the shaft of a Dremel tool on my own piece of metal. This was the first thread cuttting I’d ever done, and I wanted to describe the steps both for myself and for anyone else interested in this (as I know I found myself enjoying several thread-cutting videos that I’d found on youtube before I had my lathe). Cutting the base of a Bevel gear blank (must be very flat), on a Hendey tool & gagemakers lathe. The blank is held in a 3 jaw cushman chuck, & supported by the steady rest. The lathe speed is running about 300 rpm (in 2nd back gear), with a crossfeed of .001 (set to .002, but in belt drive, which is half of the gear drive). The part being cut is steel, 1 3/4″ diameter. The cutter is HSS. This is a finishing cut.
