Cool video about jewelers lathe, take a look:

Showing the concept of a watchmaker’s lathe. The material to be worked with is held in place by a collet, which is like a miniature chuck. Collets come in different sizes, having different sized holes in the center of them. The idea is to get a size that fits closest to the material to be cut without being too tight. The material is then turned in the lathe, towards you, and you cut into with a graver. Other things can be done too, such as using a jeweler’s saw or a file, depending on what you are trying to accomplish. When cutting with a graver, you want to have the T-rest *very* close to your work, in order to give the best control over the cut. (Note that because I was holding the camera, I was unable to do any cuts). The lathe itself (in this case, my Peerless) is driven by a belt which is connected to a variable-speed motor (not shown in this video). Some motors have a way to control the direction of rotation, but there are other ways to achieve this without that option. One way is to create a “figure eight” with the belt, or through a pulley system. An advantage to having a pulley system is that more torque can be available at much lower speeds, and there is a much broader choice of pulley ratios to choose from. The speed of the lathe itself is usually controlled either by a foot-pedal or by a rheostat. More videos may be to come! Keep an eye out.
