Is collet chuck of cnc lathe cutting machine need to do any protection when empty run or spindle turn?

By · Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Chuck at our cnc machine is use to hold the product and turn for cutting. Thus, there is nothing in chuck when machine is stop. Can any one tell me that the accuracy of machine can be effect or not when the spindle is turning without chucking. Is it need to insert any dummy work piece into the chuck when spindle is turning?

I personally would remove the collet if you were to run the spindle without a work piece in it, otherwise I would use a scrap piece of the same diameter to clamp in the chuck. It won’t likely damage your machine but it will definitely over stress your collet and limit its working life.

If you leave a collet in a collet chuck of a CNC lathe with a hydraulic drawbar it will probably deform or destroy the collet affecting the accuracy of the collet.

Modern hyrdraulics of CNC machines generate great chucking pressures. You should put a dummy part in or take the collet out just in case somebody accidentally closes it.

I have many years of experience as a Mechanical engineer and CNC programmer.

I hope this helps.
