Hello,
Im new to machining im taking classes to get certified in lathe, mill, cnc, cad,. Anyways i have a chance to buy a 1973 Clausing 10 inch with a 50 inch bed. Or also he has a Logan from around the same time thats a 12in by 55inch bed. I was wondering which would be the better buy they both look reallly nice and well kept in the pics. Just wondering if anyone had some tips for what to look out for or which one they recommend. Also i can get either one for around $900 negotiable.. Any tips or hints on buying a lathe would be nice and very helpful to me
Thanks
Nick

Are they capable of cutting threads? Then what is the Maximum rpm .
When using carbide inserts higher rpms are very useful. Also what type chuck are available? 3jaw 4 jaw, collet and will it come with a face plate so you can machine between centers.
Will it come with tool holders? Centers? Live centers dead centers?

Those are both quality brands. Of the two, one thing to consider, no matter what the size of machine you buy, the time will come that you will wish for a larger one. You need to take someone along who knows the machines and let him check them out mechanically. In addition to the options all ready mentioned, are the chuck and tail spindle bearings good, the gear box/s full of oil and free of wear metals? Are the motors wired for your shop? These are some examples of what should be looked for. There are many more.
