I’ve worked w/an old American w/an 80″
center when I was in prison…good info
for refreshing the mind to think as a machinist again…

hes fingering the hole at 6:45 hahahahhah

You should make a video showing how to cut rifling in a gun barrel.

Unlike (most) other machines a lathe can be accurately made by pattern casting, flat metal stock, a bit of hand work (ie scraping), and a few off the shelf parts like threaded rods/nuts/bolts.

South bend lathes could originally be bought as a set of castings, rather than assembled machines. So if you can get the dimensioned drawings for the components you should make the castings yourself.

for CNC just put stepper motors/encoders on the feed/hand wheel, and connect to PC (or similar)

Does Van Tech offer night school courses on using lathes and milling machines?

i want a lathe like that! but surly you could of done something more interesting than facing the barend and doing a small turn. how about thread cutting, boring. how come you didn’t use the lathe to chamfer the bar? instead you used a file which really gives a rubbish finish and not very safe. i am a cnc setter/programer so this is really old school for me.
